About 2 and a half years ago I had this wild dream. I wanted to find an old caravan – one of those vintage wooden ones often seen abandoned and forlorn in a farm or scrap yard – and convert it into a food truck. A charming, feel-good food truck selling delicious, fresh, wholesome food.

I even created a Pinterest board dedicated to food caravan inspiration to keep my dream alive.

I roped my dad into the idea (he’s an incredible handyman / carpenter who can make and fix anything). He was keeping an eye out for a suitable caravan that we could convert…

But then I fell pregnant and my plans of travelling around South Africa, visiting festivals and events with my pretty little food caravan, were put on hold indefinitely as I focused on motherhood.

Well… Beautifully-converted food and drinks caravans are finally becoming a thing at KZN events and weddings. And every time I see one of these darlings pop up on my Instagram or Facebook feed I literally drool, part envy, but mostly absolute admiration. I mean how gorgeous are these:

The Roll Bar:

The Roll Bar is a beautiful little converted caravan based in Durban. It serves a range of yummy sounding drinks and cocktails and can be hired out for events. Find out more by following them on Facebook here or Instagram here.

The Barn Owl Coffee:

I love everything about these guys. There beautiful, minimal owl logo, their attention to detail, their bamboo straws and their new aprons made by Wooding and Becker. I haven’t yet had the chance to try their coffee, but I’m sure it’s great. The best thing is they’re right on my doorstep here in the KZN Midlands. Find them on Facebook here and Instagram here.

Country Co:

Here is a stunning gem from Country Co, a KZN Midlands-based company catering to all your wedding needs from decor hire, styling and setup, bar service and bridal platters. Find out more about Country Co on Facebook here and Instagram here.

Out to Lunch

Darling Clementine is Out to Lunch’s psychedelic caravan serving vegan food at markets and events around Durban, including the Shongweni Farmers Market and iHeart Market. Their Instagram is a deliciously-colourful feast for the eyes.

I hope you’ve enjoyed some of these caravans. They’ll definitely add more sparkle to weddings and events!

Do I still want a food caravan?

I think my dream of owning a food caravan was actually a sign of my yearning to be my own boss, working and living on my own terms, doing what I love. After my daughter Emma was born, that’s exactly what I did – launch my own web design business – so my dream is being fulfilled, just in a different way to what I had imagined. Going with the flow.
